Innovate for Future

Science is for discovering things, and innovation is how we apply the discovered things to address real-world issues. In the coming decades, science will continue to reveal new wonders—from space to technology and even the human body. The 2025 National Science Month Celebration, “Harnessing the Unknown - Powering the Future through Science and Innovation,” reflects the essence of science. Science is not just about learning factual and unknown things, but also about learning. These discoveries will transform our ways of living, communicating, and overcoming global issues.

Society and science are linked. Science provides the answers (and solutions), but society creates the issues, requirements, and questions. For example, in response to health crises, a shortage of energy, and climate change, scientists are looking for new technologies, medications, and renewable energy sources. Society changes as discoveries are made, modifying laws, curricula, and ways of living to adapt to scientific findings. This engagement depends on the idea that research is a force for advancement rather than something separate from daily life.

In the next ten to twenty years, technologies like biotechnology, renewable energy, and artificial intelligence will change society. In addition to improving life, new self-directed technology, educational advancements, and a new health care delivery model will also increase educational accessibility, medical personalization, and industry efficiency. However, society must also be prepared to responsibly utilize science by adopting strategies to mitigate the unintended consequences of science, like pollution, misinformation, and misuse of technologies. Thus, we will also need environmental scientists, health scientists, human rights experts, and everyday citizens who can make sound decisions based on their observations as they learn how to define "evidence".

Nonetheless, as the theme argues, the need for curiosity and open-mindedness to the unknown remains. If science and innovation are embraced, society will be able to create a future that is smarter, safer, and sustainable. The decades ahead will test our capacity to work together to ensure that every scientific discovery and innovation serves to enhance and create a better place for all.

Hope Amid Havoc

The Philippines is currently experiencing flooding caused by extreme rainfall, rising sea levels, and higher temperatures. This is driven by climate change, which worsens the problem through activities like deforestation, overfishing, and the construction of unregulated housing developments. As a result, many Filipinos suffer, lose their farms or jobs, and find their daily lives becoming very difficult. Despite these hardships, Filipinos don't give up easily and have a strong spirit. People in the community help each other recover after disasters. That's what they refer to as the heart of a Filipino.

Sudden disasters like typhoons and heavy rains are becoming more intense. These disasters often affect the poorest communities, especially in places with low-lying coastal areas and near rivers. Some places that could be affected are the roads, schools, and other places that could easily get flooded, which makes life harder. In addition, strong winds caused by the typhoon could also bring a dangerous effect; they can ruin crops and make it difficult for people to go to work or even to study. This problem can cause damage and change people's lives.

Climate change causes disasters. These problems destroy homes, damage farms, and make Filipinos live harder. If we help and work together to protect the environment and prepare for disasters, we can reduce damage and keep our community safe.

Sports. Passion. Strength.

We went to cheer for our classmates, who were dressed in vibrant and colorful outfits. It was performed in the gym before the basketball match. It was amazing, the footwork and the way their bodies sway. Every time they moved, they were in sync. The students were amazed by the dancers' impressive moves. A loud cheer for all the performers because everyone gave their best.

This photo was taken during the intramural at our school. The maroon jersey represents the HUMMS strand while the other one represents the TVL strand. The gym was filled with students, loud cheers from the bleachers, and an energetic atmosphere that inspired everyone present. It was an intense match between these two opponents. Everyone's determined to claim victory in this match—giving up is simply not an option.

After the intense basketball match, the HUMMS strands celebrated their victory against the TVL strand. The noise from those students was so loud that it was almost unbearable, showing their excitement and support. I’m proud of both teams because they gave their best during the match. As Magic Johnson said “In life, winning and losing will both happen. What is never acceptable is quitting.”

This is a photo that I captured, a thrilling game of Sepak Takraw. It also happened during the intramural of our school in Ilocos Sur National High School. Both teams have cool footwork as they kicked and passed the ball over the net and amazing teamwork. Actually, it was my first time watching a Sepak Takraw match. Despite the damp court from the rain, the match continued with full energy and spirit.

Seeing this tennis event during intramural, I remembered myself on the court, nervous and determined to win. This year was different, I couldn't participate because my parents told me to study first since I’m a graduating student. Honestly, I felt a little sad while watching my former teammates. What if I joined this year? What if my parents allowed me to join again? What if I win, and bring the gold home? Many what-ifs are on my head while watching the tennis intramural. But it also reminds me of how much I learned something new in this sport. Just like what I said even if I’m not on the court, I will surely be on the sidelines cheering for them.
